Fight Choreography
Patrick Vuong | Fight Choreographer
In addition to eating onscreen punches and firing off flying spin kicks as a stunt fighter, Patrick also designs combat for movies, short films, stunt-actor demo reels, and martial-arts demonstrations.
Rather than arrange the usual slugfests, he creates unique fight scenes by capitalizing on his diverse martial-arts career, which has given him first-hand (or more accurately, first-fist) exposure to more than a dozen styles.
Because of his involvement in all aspects of a movie’s fight scene, it would be more accurate to describe him as an action director, which is a term that’s used more often in the Hong Kong movie industry for someone who designs and supervises all of the following aspects of a movie’s action sequences:
- fight choreography
- stunt coordination
- camera angles and shooting
- editing
Patrick’s action design style can encompass everything from flashy kicks and improvised weapons to realistic bone-crunching aesthetics and intricate close-quarter combat. His influences include Yuen Woo Ping, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Tony Jaa, James Lew, Jeff Imada, John Kreng, and of course Bruce Lee.
However, Patrick crafts his action design to meet the needs of each project and to maximize the individual director’s vision. Therefore, he can deliver a variety of fight-scene styles, including but not limited to:
- Hong Kong-style action with multiple attackers and improvised weapons
- Street-fighting brawls involving knives, bottles, furniture, etc.
- Traditional martial arts battles, both empty-handed and with weapons.
